The records contain minutes of the Danish Sudan Mission; the Sudan United Mission (SUM), Danish Branch; the Lutheran Church of Christ in the Sudan (LCCS); and the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN). The LCCS and LCCN minutes are primarily of the Executive Council. The SUM, Danish Branch minutes detail the mission conferences, the Liaison Committee, and several smaller committees. Although the Liaison Committee consisted of both church and mission members (see TALC 16/7/5), the mission members on the Liaison Committee also met separately from the larger committee and called themselves the Liaison Committee as well. Some of the Liaison Committee minutes, therefore, are for the whole group, but the majority are for the smaller mission group. There is some overlapping of committees between the church and SUM, especially in the 1960s and early 1970s. The files were placed in the group in which the larger number of items seemed to belong. Many of the files of minutes also contain agendas and correspondence related to the minutes. The records were collected by Executive Directors Rolf A. Syrdal, Theodore P. Fricke, Morris A. Sorenson, Jr., and Mark Thomsen, and Secretaries for Africa and Madagascar Lowell Hesterman and James L. Knutson.

The American Lutheran Church (1961-1987) was formed by the merger of the American Lutheran Church (1930-1960), the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church. Representatives from each of the constitutent churches formed the Joint Union Committee in 1950 to effect the merger. Presidents of the constituent bodies at the merger were Henry F.
